A Pet-Friendly Guide from Oaklea Mansion
Here in Winnsboro, summer is in full swing, and while we love seeing our guests enjoy our historic downtown, nearby lakes, and all the Fourth of July festivities, we also want to take a moment to talk about someone important: your pets.
At Oaklea Mansion Bed & Breakfast, we’re proudly pet-friendly. We know that for many of our guests, vacations aren’t complete without their furry companions. Whether you're strolling through downtown shops, lounging at Lake Winnsboro, or heading out to enjoy fireworks by Lake Cypress Springs, we want every member of the family, two-legged and four, to stay safe and cool this summer.
It’s Hot Out There: Don’t Forget About Paws on Pavement
While we can pop on some sandals and head out, your dog’s paws aren’t so lucky. Asphalt and concrete heat up fast in the Texas sun and can burn paw pads quickly, especially in the afternoon hours. Here’s a quick test: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
Try This Instead:
Walk early in the morning or later in the evening
Stick to grassy areas or shaded paths
Take frequent breaks in cool spots (our porch is a favorite among Oaklea pets!)
Stay Hydrated and Take a Cool-Down Break From the Heat
Even short walks can lead to overheating when the temperature soars. Always bring water for your pet, and consider a collapsible bowl for convenience. At Oaklea Mansion, we’re happy to provide a water refill or a shady rest on our breezy wraparound porch. Our koi pond and the cooing of doves offer a peaceful (and pet-approved) spot to relax.
Heading to the Lake? Be Extra Careful
The lakes are a blast this time of year, but pets can get overheated just like we can, especially when there’s running, swimming, and excitement involved. Make sure your pup has access to shade and fresh water, and keep an eye out for signs of heat stress.
Signs of Heatstroke in Pets Include:
Excessive panting or drooling
Rapid heart rate
Vomiting or diarrhea
Weakness or collapse
Glassy eyes or confusion
If you suspect heatstroke, get your pet to a cool place immediately and contact a veterinarian.
Breeds Most at Risk From Heat
Some pets are more prone to heat exhaustion than others, including:
Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boxers
Long-haired breeds like Huskies, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Collies
Older pets or those with medical conditions
These pets should stay cool, hydrated, and avoid midday activity. Consider using cooling mats, pet-safe sunscreen, and taking indoor breaks during the hottest part of the day.
Pet Safety Is Part of Southern Hospitality
At Oaklea Mansion, we believe taking care of your whole family, including your pets, is part of true hospitality. That’s why we welcome well-behaved pets with open arms and southern charm. You'll find shaded areas, water bowls, and even a few friendly birds to watch. We love animals around here, and we want them to enjoy Winnsboro just as much as you do.

Whether you’re celebrating downtown or by the lake, let Oaklea Mansion be your relaxing, pet-friendly home base. Book your summer getaway and experience the charm of historic Winnsboro. Remember to pack a little extra water and a lot of love for your four-legged sidekick.
