Doves are back!

If you’ve ever spent a quiet morning or a golden evening on the porch of Oaklea Mansion, you’ve probably noticed one of its most peaceful and enchanting features, the gentle cooing of the doves. Their soft, rhythmic calls echo through the grounds like nature’s lullaby, adding a soothing soundtrack to weddings, weekend getaways, and peaceful porch sits.

For many of our guests, the doves have become as much a part of the Oaklea experience as our historic charm and Southern hospitality.

But a couple of years ago, something unexpected and heartbreaking happened.

A powerful derecho storm tore through the area, damaging trees and structures, and sadly, it took a toll on our beloved doves as well. Their numbers dwindled, and for a long while, the cooing that once filled the air fell silent. They stopped nesting. The once lively flutters were replaced with stillness.

But we’re thrilled to announce some joyful news: the doves have returned. And not just returned, they’re thriving.

This season, we’ve witnessed an exciting resurgence. The doves are nesting again; we already have several tiny chicks in our enclosures. Their sweet coos have returned to the mansion, mingling with the sound of wind through the trees and the laughter of guests celebrating life's special moments.

And now, even if you aren’t staying with us in person, you can still be part of the magic.

We’re so excited to introduce the Oaklea Dove Cam, a live stream that will soon be available to the public. You’ll be able to tune in from anywhere in the world to watch these beautiful birds as they tend to their nests, feed their young, and perch peacefully.
