Warm weather has arrived in Winnsboro, and at Oaklea Mansion, we can feel the excitement in the air. With some of Texas’s most beautiful lakes just a short drive away, this is the perfect time to prep your gear and plan a day on the water. Whether you're fishing at Lake Winnsboro, tubing on Lake Cypress Springs, or enjoying the peaceful shores of Lake Holbrook, there’s no shortage of outdoor fun nearby.
We're surrounded by some of the best recreational lakes in East Texas, including Lake Fork, Lake Bob Sandlin, and many others within easy reach. Over the next few weeks, we’ll spotlight these destinations in a series of blog posts to help you make the most of your stay at Oaklea Mansion.
But before we dive into the fun, let’s talk safety.
We want your lake day memories to be full of laughter and relaxation, not accidents. Whether you’re swimming, fishing, boating, or skiing, here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:
1. Always Wear a Life Jacket
Even strong swimmers can run into trouble in open water. Ensure everyone in your group has a properly fitting, Coast Guard-approved life jacket, especially children and anyone on a boat or jet ski.
2. Know the Weather Forecast

Texas weather can change quickly. Before heading out, check the local forecast for high winds, thunderstorms, or heat advisories. Lightning and water do not mix!
3. Never swim in the Lake alone
Always use the buddy system, even in designated swim areas. If someone gets a cramp or finds themselves in distress, having a partner nearby could be life-saving.
4. Watch for Boaters and Jet Skis
If you're swimming or tubing, stay alert for boats and personal watercraft. Avoid swimming in boating lanes and make sure you’re visible by using brightly colored flotation devices.
5. Stay Hydrated and Wear Sunscreen
It’s easy to get dehydrated or sunburned when you're having fun. Drink plenty of water throughout the day and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen at least every two hours.

6. Don’t Mix Alcohol and Water Sports
Enjoy that cold drink back at the mansion. When you're on the water, stay alert and sober—especially if you're operating a boat.
7. Know the Local Rules
Each lake may have its own regulations regarding fishing licenses, boating speeds, and swimming areas. Familiarize yourself with the rules before you go.
At Oaklea Mansion, we’re here to help you have a memorable and safe East Texas adventure. Stay tuned for our upcoming posts where we’ll explore the best activities each lake has to offer—from hidden fishing spots to the best places to kayak at sunrise.
In the meantime, pack your cooler, grab your towels, and don’t forget those life jackets—summer is calling!
